This can be performed through the eyelid skin or inside the eyelid. The surgical approach taken depends on the specific findings and tests performed during the preoperative evaluation. The incisions for ptosis repair are typically on the inside of the eyelid and are not visible after the sutures are removed and full healing has taken place. During your consultation with Dr. Aytek Co\u015far, he will examine your eyelids and determine which surgical technique will provide you with the best results.<\/p><p><strong>What is ptosis?<\/strong><\/p><p>Ptosis (pronounced \"toe-sis\") is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops. This is not to be confused with extra skin, fat or muscle on the eyelid, which is typically addressed with blepharoplasty surgery. In ptosis, the edge of the upper eyelid (where the eyelashes are) falls into or covers the pupil when the eye is open. This causes visual impairment.<\/p><p>When it can be shown that ptosis reduces vision (peripheral vision), its correction is covered by most insurance plans. Proof of vision loss requires photographic documentation and specialized testing (visual field testing) that can be done in the office. If the degree of ptosis is not so severe (does not affect vision), it is considered elective surgery and can be corrected as a cosmetic procedure.<\/p><p><strong>What Causes Ptosis?<\/strong><\/p><p>Ptosis can be caused by congenital or acquired defects in the muscle (or tendon) that lifts the eyelid. It is also associated with growths or neurological diseases that pull the eyelid down.
